1. GEOGRAPHIC SCALE PROBLEM
When asked how to design a piece of the city that is 2 km long, the answer is not on the scale of a micro urban strategy but on a geographical scale intervention; articulating the waterfront promenade with the natural and urban ecosystem of Valdivia through wetlands.

2. WETLANDS: IDENTITY OF VALDIVIA
While 23% of the urban area of Valdivia corresponds to humid areas (of which approximately 40% are wetlands), the area of the project does not present this condition. However, the location of the project on the riverbanks offers an opportunity to articulate adjoining wetlands – both in the Calle Calle river and those found within the urban area of Valdivia – through ecological corridors, bringing the biodiversity of the territory into the waterfront promenade, making it publicly accesible and recognizable as part of the identity of the city and its inhabitants.

3. “WETBANK” PARK: ECONOMY, CULTURE AND ECOLOGY
Given the scale of public investment involved, the project should not only respond to an economic return, but also to environmental and social factors. Culturally, its contribution to environmental education and natural heritage awareness is indisputable. Ecologically, wetlands are amongst the most productive ecosystems in the world, comparable only to tropical rainforests and coral reefs. Its positive effects on greenhouse gases is just one of the benefits we might enjoy.

4. ELEMENTS: WETLAND, PROMENADE, DECK AND TOWERS
The filling of the highest levels found along the shore would build an artificial wetland with native species that could atract black-necked swans, blackbirds, and other local species. Given the narrowness of the existing riverwalk, this would be extended over the wetlands with the help of wooden walkways which would double the length of the promenade to a 4 km long cirtuit; 1 hour of walking or a 25 minute bike-ride. The deck-plazas and towers would be the main place of observation and rest within the riverwalk, giving it a certain spatial rythm and concentrating the main shops and services along the way.
